Plateau State is rapidly emerging as a preferred destination for the Netherlands’ agricultural and development cooperation, driven by the forward-looking vision and leadership of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang.

In a statement by the Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, this growing international interest was reaffirmed on Monday when the Deputy Ambassador of the Netherlands to Nigeria, Mr. Ronald Sonnemans, led May high-level delegation on a courtesy visit to the Governor at the Government House, Rayfield, Jos.

Ambassador Sonnemans, who was visiting Plateau for the first time in 15 years, expressed delight at the state’s transformation, describing its environment as “refreshing and conducive for investment.” He commended Governor Mutfwang’s strategic visit to the Dutch in September, noting that it marked a turning point that has already sparked a matchmaking process linking Dutch agricultural firms with businesses in Plateau State.

During his visit to Plateau’s bustling potato market, the Deputy Ambassador was especially impressed by the strong participation of women in the wholesale and distribution value chain, supplying markets across Nigeria and neighbouring countries.

“The climate is great, the soil is fantastic, and the workforce is very dedicated. All these ingredients make Plateau State an attractive ground for strengthened cooperation,” Sonnemans said. He assured that the Dutch government is committed to sustaining and expanding its partnership with the state.

Governor Mutfwang, while receiving the delegation, stated that Plateau State is ready to leverage the Netherlands’ globally recognized expertise in modern agriculture, technology, and agribusiness systems.

“We saw a small country with a small population but with a big heart. What we witnessed in terms of agricultural advancement is something we yearn to be part of,” the Governor said.

He highlighted two key pillars of collaboration: the development of the potato value chain and livestock improvement. While acknowledging the Netherlands’ technical excellence, the Governor emphasized that Plateau State offers abundant land, a favourable climate, and a dedicated workforce.

“We have the land and the weather. What has been lacking is the political will to bring these assets together and create value. That political will is now here,” he declared. “We are committed to raising the level of collaboration between the government of the Netherlands and the government of Plateau State.”

Governor Mutfwang reaffirmed his administration’s determination to transform Plateau into a competitive agricultural hub that attracts foreign partnerships, enhances productivity, creates jobs, and strengthens food security.

The visiting Dutch team included officials from the Consulate-General in Lagos, the Agricultural Office in Accra, and the Embassy in Abuja, alongside senior officials of the Plateau State Government.

With this renewed commitment, Plateau State is steadily positioning itself as a model for agricultural innovation, investment, and international cooperation under Governor Mutfwang’s dynamic leadership.
