In a statement by the Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, the Executive Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has called on the Federal Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) to prioritize strategic agricultural investments in Plateau, describing the state as a potential food production hub for Nigeria and the West African sub-region.

Governor Mutfwang made the appeal on Tuesday when he received a delegation from MOFI, led by its Executive Director of Investment, Dr. Femi Ogunseinde, during a courtesy visit to Government House, Jos.

Highlighting Plateau’s comparative advantage, the Governor said the state’s rich soil and unique climate make it ideal for large-scale farming and agribusiness.

“Virtually everything grows on the Plateau—from grapes and avocados to strawberries, vegetables, and the famous Miango pepper. If properly harnessed, these resources will not only enhance food security but also position Nigeria for genuine food sovereignty,” h remarked.

Expressing concern over Nigeria’s underutilized agricultural potential, the Governor cited potato production as a missed opportunity. “Plateau farmers currently produce seven tons per hectare, while farmers in the Netherlands produce 40 tons. The least we can do for ourselves and for the black race is to guarantee food security. Only then can we be celebrated as the giant of Africa,” he emphasized, urging MOFI to spearhead transformative investments.

Earlier in his remarks, Dr. Ogunseinde praised Plateau’s agricultural promise and scenic beauty, describing the state as an untapped treasure. “Plateau is special, and we will be ambassadors for this state. We are here to deepen conversations on how we can re-energize agriculture as a catalyst for investments that will change the way farming is practiced in Nigeria,” he said.

He revealed that MOFI’s priorities include modernizing farming techniques, developing storage and processing infrastructure, optimizing special agricultural processing zones, and creating sustainable export pathways.

“The whole world will soon know about Plateau potatoes, roses, horticulture, flowers, and dairy products. We are already working to establish export markets in the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas. What we seek is your continued support in removing bureaucratic bottlenecks so that Plateau’s vast potential can be fully realized,” he added.

In a related development, Governor Mutfwang has appealed to parents and guardians across Plateau State to protect their children from human trafficking and social vices. The Governor made the call while receiving Miss Dorcas Shut, a Plateau indigene who was rescued alongside her daughter Isabella, after being trafficked to South Africa nine years ago.

Expressing gratitude for her safe return, Governor Mutfwang cautioned young people against falling for deceptive promises of a better life abroad. “I thank God for keeping you alive. Your experience should be a lesson to others wh may be contemplating such a dangerous path. Some never return, but God has given you a second chance. We will support you to rebuild your life,” he assured.

The Governor further warned human traffickers to desist from their illegal activities, stressing that his administration, in collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs, the Gender Equality Commission, and the Attorney General’s Office, will continue to enforce th law and protect the vulnerable. He also commended the Diaspora Commission for partnering with the state to secure the rescue of trafficked victims.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Caroline Dafur, praised the Governor for approving the flight tickets for Dorcas and her daughter, describing him as a leader deeply committed to child protection. “Your vision to ensure that every Plateau child trafficked abroad is brought back home is being fulfilled today,” she noted.

Overcome with emotion, Dorcas recounted her ordeal and warned young girls against the traps of traffickers. “Out there, you’ll hear enticing promises, but I assure you there’s nothing for you. They will exploit you and leave you stranded. Please, don’t fall for it,” she cautioned.
